Case Studies
1: Merit Review
ICU cases are among the most difficult to screen and I’m so glad we were trusted to screen this case!
A woman died at the hospital. She had severe sepsis and comorbidities, but the family member believed an error in inserting a central line caused her death. The death certificate and autopsy report were consistent, documenting sepsis as cause of death. The central line insertion did cause tissue damage and bruising, but the vessel was not compromised.
Our client’s instinct was that the case wasn’t going to go anywhere but, having a heart of gold, he was willing to pay for an evaluation to give the grieving family the comfort that someone cared enough to thoroughly investigate her death. So, we cracked open the medical records and WOW.
Medical record review revealed:
- She had an unusual medical condition not documented in her history but evident by her home medication list that was not considered during her treatment.
- She was being given a medication at the hospital known to worsen hypotension at the same time she had low blood due to septic shock.
- She was in fluid overload for many days and her labs and ABGs were not being monitored at correct intervals.
This woman may not have died if these items were addressed.
At Aperio, we understand that attorneys sincerely want to give grieving families and injured people who call their office the right answers. At the same time, it is difficult to shoulder exorbitant costs on cases that have no merit. We help our partner law firms screen cases and provide quality, affordable work products based on the merit and complexity of the assignment.
2: Chronology Heroes!
Our attorney client approached us with a unique situation. He already knew he needed a cardiology expert for a malpractice case and did not need to engage a legal nurse at this time. There was an upcoming tight deadline because our client took this case over from another attorney. He needed was 16,000 pages of medical records organized, bates stamped and a chronology for the cardiology expert, and he needed it in 1 week!
Recognizing that not all jobs require the same tool, we assigned our nurse paralegals team rather than a nurse expert to help with these work products.
Our nurse paralegals worked tirelessly to expertly document the over 16,000 pages of medical records into a chronology, flagging missing information and duplicate information.
Our thoughtful approach using nurse paralegals instead of nurse consultants enabled us to produce the high-quality targeted chronology in 1 week and at a cost savings of over $3800.00.
3: Deposition Assistance
Two of our top legal nurse consultants teamed up together to for a challenging knee replacement orthopedic case!
Our nurses were asked to read the plaintiff and defense expert reports, compare them to the medical records and suggest areas of concern or strengths to question the experts.
After the depositions were, including the Defendant, there were a total of 4 depositions. There were a wide variety of potential surgical issues discussed during the depositions. In all, 79 aspects of the surgery, the plaintiff’s history, and pre/post care were discussed at the depositions.
Our nurses took on the task of summarizing each deposition and creating a table to quickly identify variations in the 4 doctors’ opinions with notes comparing evidence in the medical record.
This provided the attorney with the in-depth line by line analysis to understand each opinion, issue and prepare rebuttals.
