Case Study
Zantac Lawsuit

The Zantac litigation has been a dynamic and evolving mass tort case, marked by significant legal developments and shifting momentum. Initially, studies in 2019 revealed that ranitidine, the active ingredient in Zantac, could degrade into NDMA, a potential carcinogen. This led to the FDA’s 2020 request to remove the drug from the market, followed by the formation of a multi-district litigation (MDL). However, a major setback occurred in 2022 when a federal judge excluded plaintiffs’ expert testimony, significantly impacting the progress of the litigation.
Despite this challenge, cases began gaining traction in state courts, particularly in California, Delaware, and Illinois. In 2023, a California judge ruled in favor of allowing expert testimony, reigniting momentum for plaintiffs. With over 70,000 cases currently pending in state courts, the litigation has seen renewed energy, culminating in settlements from major pharmaceutical companies. In 2024, both Sanofi and Pfizer agreed to settlements, and GSK announced a $2.2 billion settlement resolving 93% of claims, expected to be finalized by mid-2025. Importantly, GSK has not admitted liability as part of the agreement.
As mass tort firms navigate the complexities of these evolving cases, Aperio has played a crucial role in supporting attorneys with case workups, administrative support, and settlement submissions. Our team has been deeply involved in the Zantac litigation since 2022, ensuring that law firms have the necessary resources to efficiently manage and advance their claims.
